The mission of the Department of Statistics and Data Sciences (SDS) is to be a world-class center for statistical science that advances scholarship across the university and prepares UT graduates to flourish in an information-rich world. The SDS was established in 2007 to address an urgent need for new statistics courses and research support throughout UT. Over the last five years, SDS has grown into a thriving academic home for undergraduates learning critical data analysis skills, graduate students advancing science through applications of modern statistical methods to their own data sets, no matter how big or complex, and a growing core of statistics faculty who are advancing our ability to turn the information explosion of the 21st century into discovery, knowledge and progress. SDS has also become an invaluable resource for many across UT and beyond, through its consulting services, Summer Statistics Institute, and array of other innovative training opportunities.
The department coordinates a suite of undergraduate and graduate courses designed to address the needs of students in different disciplines. Plus we offer students the opportunity to earn a PhD in Statistics, an MS in Statistics, a Portfolio in Applied Statistical Modeling, a Portfolio in Scientific Computation, a Certificate in Applied Statistical Modeling, and a Certificate in Scientific Computation. We also provide consulting services for UT students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, we bring prominent faculty to campus as part of the SDS Seminar Series, and host the Summer Statistics Institute each year in May.
